Tortoises are a Family, Testudinidae, of land-dwelling turtles in the order Testudines. Unlike public opinion, tortoises are in fact turtles instead of element of a separate group. Like most turtles, tortoises are shielded from killers by a shell. The top part of the shell is the carapace, the underside is the plastron, and the two are linked by the bridge. The carapace is merged to both the vertebrae and ribcage, and turtles are special among animals during that the pectoral and pelvic bands are inside, rather than outdoors, the ribcage. Tortoises can vary in size from a few centimeters to two meters. They are generally diurnal animals with tendencies to be crepuscular depending on the ambient temperatures. They are generally reclusive animals.

Female tortoises dig nesting burrows where they lay from one to 30 eggs. The plastron of a female tortoise often has a visible V-shaped level here the tail which promotes passing the eggs. Juvenile tortoises frequently need a various balance of nutrients than grownups, so might consume foods which a a lot more completely grown tortoise would not.
