Los Zetas (Spanish for "The Z's") is a violent and powerful criminal organization in Mexico, and is thought about by the U.S. government to be the "most highly progressed, sophisticated, and hazardous cartel operating in Mexico." The beginnings of Los Zetas date back to the late 1990s when task forces of the Mexican Army's forces deserted their rankings and determined to work as the armed wing of the Gulf Cartel, a medicine trafficking organization. In February 2010, Los Zetas escaped from their former employer and formed their own criminal organization.

Los Zetas are well armed and equipped, and unlike various other traditional criminal organizations in Mexico, medication trafficking composes just around 50 % of their revenue, while a big part of their revenue comes from other tasks routed versus both rival medicine cartels and private citizens; their ruthless strategies, which include beheadings to terrorize their rivals and, abuse and indiscriminate massacre, show that they often choose cruelty over bribery. Los Zetas are likewise Mexico's biggest medication cartel in regards to topographical visibility, surpassing its rivals, the Sinaloa Cartel. Los Zetas also run via defense noises, assassinations, extortion, kidnappings, and other criminal tasks. The organization is based in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, directly throughout the boundary from Laredo, Texas.

After Osiel Cárdenas Guillen took complete command of the Gulf Cartel in 1999, he found himself in a terrible lawn battle. Cardenas' goal was to safeguard himself from rival drug cartels and from the Mexican armed force.
